I believe... unlike a lot of people that gift cards aren't insulting, as long as they're from somewhere that the giver knows the reciepient shops anyway.
(Let's just say that I've given up on anything tangible for birthday and Christmas, so I'll be glad just to get giftcards to Ace, McKay's, Best Buy, etc. so I can pick out what I really want...)
