What has been the single best part of Final Fantasy games since the very first FF?
That's right, customizing your party. Even in the more character-specific ones like FFIX and FFVII you could still name your party members.
This was slightly lost in FFVIII, in which you could only name the main hero and heroine (Defaults - Squall and Rinoa).
Then it was completely lost in FFX and FFX-2, in which the main character (X)/romantic interest (X-2) could be named, but was never referred to BY name due to the fact that the characters... spoke.
I've never played FFXI (Online... duh fuh?), so I can't comment on that, but I will say that, I may play X and X-2, but not being able to name the characters takes a bit of the fun out of it.
From the beginning, my parties have carried names of people I've known. Hell, my first FF7 party had Cloud and Barret named Jay and Kay, after the nicknames of myself and my closest friend of the time (yes, taken from MiB.). Since then, I've enjoyed knowing that the person who'll save the planet carries my name, that the woman they care for is named after the woman I do, that their friends/teammates have the same names as my friends.
Speaking characters? After hearing the voices a few times so that I could read the subtitles and hear the voices in my head I went back to muting the game and having some REAL music playing in the background (a habit I picked up from a cousin), I don't even LISTEN to them, but I still like naming my characters!
And FFXI is ONLINE? How do they expect THAT to work? Instead of the 49.99 (or whatever) that you pay ONE TIME for the game you pay a subscription fee each month? And how do they expect parties to work, hm?
Voices, online play, Square - Squaresoft - Square/Enix, whatever you want to be called....
Please, return to the basics, don't try and assume that "New" is "Better"...
If you continue to ignore the customers, the players, I'm afraid that the Fantasy just might really BE...
Final.
