(For when it's just too much for a footnote in my tallybook!)
(Hey, it IS a hobby...)
Game 21; Apocalypse Tournament game three
Imperial Guard w/ Space Marines and Inquisition (J.T.) Versus pure Imperial Guard (Ricky)
Outcome: Victory, J.T.
Yes, I actually won... Admittedly on a technicality - Game three was being scored on Kill Points and we were halfway through the fourth turn when Phillip, who was running the tourny, came over and asked where we were in the turn since time was almost over. Since we were halfway into the turn, it was decided that turn four kills wouldn't count, so I won 7 Kill Points {that is, I had utterly destroyed seven of his units} to 4 Kill Points. If his kills in turn four had counted, it would have been a tie.
Couple good stories from that battle -
Turn one, I brought in my Inquistorial Detachment, a Space Marine Tactical Squad, a Salamander Scout vehicle, Leman Russ MBT and a Basilisk Artillery tank. I put the Salamander, Russ and Basilisk down at one end of the board to put their long-range weapons to use while my Marines and Inquisitor drew fire, they got trashed but my tanks survived to drop some 5" 'Pie Plate' templates down on his Vostroyan Guard squads with suppressing fire from the Salamander. - on a side note, five heavy bolters with three shots each from infantry squads is NOT something to laugh at. They might not be able to move and fire, but trust me, they don't NEED to move to kill you.
Turn two, in his movement phase, he Flank Marched a pair of Russ right in behind my own deployed Russ, but failed to destroy it. In my movement phase, however, I brought in my Imperial Guard infantry platoon complete with its command squad;
The squad with the autocannon went in the woods at the far end of the table where the Marines had been to take advantage of the cover save, draw Heavy bolter fire and take potshots at Vostroyans, my second squad deployed around an objective to secure it...
The command squad, however, I brought in at point-blank range to the rear of one of Ricky's Russ... They had a Meltagun {Anti-Tank weapon} and promptly destroyed it.
My second Leman Russ came in alongside its brother tank to add its own Battle Cannon to the mix...
In the middle of my long table edge, I brought in my Baneblade the Bismarck, which promptly began dropping 10" 'Pizza Pan' templates from its Baneblade Cannon, Pie Plates from its Demolisher cannon, three sets of twin-linked heavy bolter shots and two lascannon shots onto his infantry and the Russes behind them I brought a couple squads down in strength and finished off one or two with it that turn.
Turn three, Ricky took vengence for his Leman Russ by deepstriking a squad of Deathwing Terminators right on my platoon command squad and wiping them out. At the same time, he brought in a Deathwing Dreadnought by drop pod right at my Baneblade and tried to Multimelta it into submission - But, the Bismarck endured. The infantry squad that was holding the objective was decimated by a blast from Ricky's second Leman Russ that had Flank Marched in on turn two.
My turn came around and it was time for the end game - The ten Sentinels of my Emperor's Talon Recon Group and the Command Platoon of my infantry - with the Regimental Command Squad, Sniper squad, AT Squad, AND three more Sentinels - accompanied by my Grey Knights squad came into play
I put the Snipers and the Command Platoon Sentinels by the Autocannon squad, the Anti-Tank squad was placed over by my own Leman Russ tanks to try and pick off any of Ricky's surviving tanks, the Emperor's Talon came in between the Baneblade and the AT Squad, the Grey Knights entered the fray in a Bugs/Daffy type move - coming in behind the Terminators that had killed my Platoon Command, and finally - in a move I like to call "Second Verse, Same as The First" - my Regimental Command moved up alongside my Baneblade to target the Dreadnought with their own Meltagun...
My Shooting Phase hit and I went nuts - I used my Orbital Bombardment Strategic Asset to hit the remainder of Ricky's infantry, the Baneblade's Main Gun, two sets of Heavy Bolters and Demolisher cannon, along with my Salamander, Basilisk, and all thirteen Sentinels, all were used to reduce them down to one squad that was at half-strength. Using Incenerator and Storm Bolters, my Grey Knights struck hard at the Deathwing Terminators, but the Dreadnought survived a lascannon shot from the Baneblade, a Meltagun shot and a Plasma Pistol shot from the Regimental Command.
Assault Phase, I charge my Grey Knights into close combat with the Terminators, wiping them out to the last man and bringing an end to the Bugs and Daffy game of 'Attack from Behind' and scoring my Seventh kill point (Four infantry squads, a Terminator squad, and two tanks.)
In the process, I had lost a Space Marine Squad, an Inquistorial Retinue, a tank and a Platoon Command. Of course, if the fourth turn had counted I would have also lost an Infantry Squad, an AT squad already and then he would have unleash his own Baneblade's cannon and attacked with his Dreadnought (I don't know what I would have done for my own turn four), so as I said in the beginning - I won in three rounds, but if we had gotten the full fourth round in (or even managed to get to the complete six rounds), it could have been a VERY different story...
