As you guys know, I recently made FFX bow before me like a pitiful mortal...
But it got me thinking. There's been Final Fantasy, II/IV, III/VI, V, VII, Advent Children, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerebus, FFT, FF8, FF9, FFX, X-2, 11/Online (1), XII, XIII, XIII-2, and I think there's also FFXIV/(Online 2), isn't there? That's not counting Tactics Advanced, Mystic Quest, XII: Revernant Wings, etc... Each game has had its good points and its bad points, which admittedly vary between players since they can be a matter of opinion. Say that you've just been asked by Squaresoft to create the next Final Fantasy game - or at least the 'engine' for it - but you can only use elements that have existed in some manner in previous Final Fantasys.
Which would you choose?
One thing I would definitely have to have would be something like FFX's 'Sphere Theater' where you can rewatch cutscenes/FMVs and listen to the different musics from throughout the game. Think about how cool that would have been for other FF games - you could have rewatched the transformation of Balamb Garden in FF8 or the WEAPON attack on Junon in FF7, and so forth...
I like XII's 'open world' combat system where the monsters are already visible on the screen and you can move around during a fight to gain advantage or manipulate the flow of battle, but there's a counter-flaw with the 'area-to-area' maps from X and XII that makes me ambivilent - one of the cool parts about VII, 8 and 9 were the vehicles you could operate on the world map, especially the airships (Highwind forever!) which you can't really do with area-to-area maps (instead of 'free-roam' flying, you get a destination list which the airship takes you directly to - at least in FFX).
