There's good news at the gas pump: Prices are falling.

But don't get too excited. You'll hardly notice the decrease for a while.

Regular unleaded was only an average of .6 cents cheaper per gallon on Tuesday, according to chicago gasprices.com. For SUV drivers, that will save you about 12 cents on a 20-gallon tank.

On average in the Chicago area, unleaded was going for $3.122 per gallon Tuesday, down from Monday's average, $3.128 per gallon.

The most expensive gallon of gas went for $3.45 at the Shell station on North and LaSalle in Chicago. The cheapest gas price was at Supersonic at 98th and Kedzie in Evergreen Park at $2.92 a gallon.

AAA Chicago spokeswoman Kris Lathan said gas prices were likely to continue to decline over the next six months, following an annual post-Labor Day trend.

Under $2 a gallon? Not likely

Typically, the demand and price for gas drops with cooler weather, kids heading back to school and less frequent family road trips, she said.

"We think in the short term, the next six months, we'll see prices go down," Lathan said. "It's tough to say how much.

"Will we ever see gas under $2 a gallon again? I don't see that happening. But $2.50 or $2.75 a gallon might be here to stay."

Here in West PA it's down below $3, after hitting $3.20 last weekend (all prices for regular, 87 octane).

Also, one of the local supermarkets owns a chain of gas stations, and started a program a couple years back: for every fifty dollars you spend, you get ten cents off a gallon.
Needless to say, they are destroying the competition.
