When it comes to having a sweet tooth, Midwesterners take the cake.

Consumption of sugar and sweeteners is highest in the Midwest at 114 pounds per capita -- 11 percent above the national average, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture report.

Sweetener consumption is higher in middle-income suburbia and among teenagers ages 12 to 19, the report by the USDA's Economic Research Service also found.

Researchers analyzed USDA survey data up to 1999. While U.S. sugar consumption increased nearly 25 percent between 1985 and 1999, it has since leveled off, the report said.
