Five Extra Facts About Pat Morita
1) As a child, Morita was bedridden for many years and entertained himself by making sock puppets and performing shows.
2) Before rising to television stardom, Morita was the head of the computer operations department of an aerospace company. So if anyone tells you that it doesn't take a rocket scientist to become a beloved television and movie icon, you can be like, "Yeah, it does."
3) Morita left Happy Days for his own television show, Mr. T and Tina. No one watched it, so he slunk back to Happy Days a few years later, a wiser, more pentitent ethnic character actor.
4) Judging from his best-known roles as Happy Days' Arnold and Karate Kid's Mr. Miyagi, you'd think Pat Mortita had a thick accent, but he spoke perfect English; the accent was fake. Maybe this says something profound about the way television portrays people from non-Western cultures.
5) Morita died of natural causes on Thanksgiving.
Rest in Peace, Miyagi-sensei. -_-
