WHY did I expect this?
"Dark Knight" is a 2008 movie starring Christian Bale and Heath Ledger taking place in the 'early days' of Batman's existance
"Dark Knight Returns" is a 1986 comic miniseries written by Frank Miller giving a look into a possible future where Batman comes out of retirement to fight Two-Face, Joker and a new gang of criminals called 'the Mutants' one last time, as well as being pitted against the new Police Commissioner of Gotham after Gordon's forced retirement and against a government agent Superman... on Batman's side he has Jim Gordon (up until they force him into retirement), a new (female) Robin in Carrie Kelly, an aged but still kicking ass Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, and, as always, Alfred.
Beyond being Batman, using "Dark Knight" in their titles, and featuring the Joker, they're entirely different things.

The whole "WHY did I expect this" was at me, actually. I had started to say that DK and DKR were two different things, then didn't and was loathing myself for it.
Beyond that... Sorry, I wasn't trying to imply that you were.
