"Before the great empires arose, Mu was. The Mainland Empire was its throne. The lands of the Mongols and Turks were its shield; Nippon was its sword. India was its hierophant. The desert kingdoms were its libraries. The One Thousand Nations were its bards. Oceana was its crown jewel.
"But the Mainland fell and stuggles to rebuild; The Mongols are lost, the Turks scattered to the winds; Nippon weeps from the constant threat of civil war; India's philosophers have been silenced or killed; the Phoenix no longer flies over the kingdoms of sand; The One Thousand Nations march slowly to their demise; and Oceana's untamed beauty is defiled by the pale savages to the west; for Mu is lost, and with it, its influence.
"Thus ends the last great era of empires."
~ Himura Badamon, Japanese historian and chronologer, circa the mid 1600's A.D. Translated by Tyrone L. Anderson, anthropologist, Cook County University.

After watching "Yojimbo," I got an idea for how "Turning Japanese" will work.
Eventually Japanese Public Security Bureau Section 2 (which handles organized crime, such as yakuza) and External Affairs Section 1 (which handles cases involving non-Asian foreigners like Tyrone and Kirby) will be getting involved with our heroes piracy issues.
(Thank you, "Ghost In The Shell," for the info!)

Random Travelogue Trivia:
Megan knows military Krav Maga Eric uses Muay Thay. Vic employs Iaijitsu and modified Jiujitsu Tyrone and Kirby don't know how to fight at all. (This will cause them lots of problems.)

An Idea for a short Travelogue Story:
"When the Levees Break": Tyrone, Kirby and Megan go to aid Chinese archaeologists excavate the tomb of Kublai Khan, son of Ghengis, along a tributary of the Yangzhi River. But the river is about to be dammed, flooding the site, and looters working for black market relic auctions intend to find Kublai's treasure first...

*amused*
And that's any different from real life, how?

For one thing, our heroes will be coming out of this alive...

Short story ideas - Killer Queen: Our heroes find the sword of Boudica, Queen of the Iceni, but the warrior queen and her army, now revenants, want it back. The Time Warp (or, "A Love Letter to Tom Baker"): Tyrone and Kirby excavate and survey an assassins' fortress, but a man from the past comes to stop them. The Mariner's Revenge: Our heroes aid in recovering a pirate vessel, and are cursed for doing so. The only one who knows how to undo the curse is the man who sunk the ship... The Marrakesh Express: An artifact gets stolen from a train from Marrakesh to Casablanca, and Tyrone must find out who did it within three hours.

"We have been told we are children of Allah; descendants of Abraham, followers of Muhammed. So why do we fight others who worship our Lord Allah in different ways? Why do we slay our brothers in different tribes? No benevolent father would allow his children to kill themselves and each other for his sake, Yet, I refuse to believe that Allah is not gracious. The only answer that remains, therefore, is that not all of us are Children of Allah."
~ From a piece of text found in the rediscovered northern temple in Iraq in "Houses of the Holy"

...
Should Tyrone have a girlfriend by the end of the series?

Hm...
She'd have to be someone as obsessed about archeology or something as him (maybe a Paleontologist or something)...

A potential love interest I have planned is the Coffee Girl, Alicia. She majors in History and Mythology.

Which would make her able to understand what Tyrone's talking about and even debate point with him on... Just one question... WHO? I don't think you've mentioned any "Alica the Coffee Girl" before... Short story ideas - The Marrakesh Express: An artifact gets stolen from a train from Marrakesh to Casablanca, and Tyrone must find out who did it within three hours. Thinking about it, this reminds me of an episode of "MacGyver" where native tribesmen hijack a train to find the con-men that sold their village fake medicine (killing some of the village children) and Mac saves the day by rigging up a lie detector using a blood-pressure cuff and an alarm clock to find the con-men... (Season one, episode nineteen; "Slow Death")

I haven't, because she was going to be a bit character. One of the University's halls has a cafeteria. Alicia works there, making coffee. Tyrone's been there so often that she knows exactly what kind of coffee he drinks, and personally delivers it to him when he walks in.

Heh.
At the risk of causing the song of the same name to get stuck in my head, it sounds like love to me.
